Proximal aortic stiffness in the paediatric adolescent population

چکیده
Background Pathological studies have shown that atherosclerotic disease begins in early childhood. Furthermore, associations between risk factors and early atherosclerotic disease are evident in this population and therefore may be linked to future symptomatic coronary events. While we have shown that ageing preferentially stiffens the proximal aorta in an adult population, it is uncertain whether this also occurs in an adolescent cohort.

Relationship between proximal aortic stiffness assessed with CMR and left ventricular diastolic function in a bicentric asymptomatic population with preserved left ventricular ejection fraction
Background Left ventricular (LV) diastolic dysfunction is considered to be an important determinant of heart failure with preserved LV ejection fraction (LVEF). Hypertension, diabetes and aging leading to increased aortic stiffness have been related to impaired diastolic function. Novel CMR measures of proximal aortic function have been recently shown to be better markers of vascular aging than...
متن کاملAugmentation index and aortic stiffness in bicuspid aortic valve patients with non-dilated proximal aortas
BACKGROUND We compared aortic stiffness, aortic impedance and pressure from wave reflections in the setting of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) to the tricuspid aortic valve (TAV) in the absence of proximal aortic dilation. We hypothesized BAV is associated with abnormal arterial stiffness. METHODS Ten BAV subjects (47 ± 4 years, 6 male) and 13 TAV subjects (46 ± 4 years, 10 male) without signific...
متن کاملProximal Aortic Stiffness Is Increased in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Activity in Children and Adolescents
Patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are prone to premature atherosclerosis and are at risk for the development of cardiovascular disease. Increased arterial stiffness is emerging as a marker of subclinical atherosclerosis. Purpose. To measure proximal aortic stiffness in children and adolescents with SLE. Methods. We studied 16 patients with SLE in activity (mean age 15 ± 2.42 year...
متن کاملAortic diameter, wall stiffness, and wave reflection in systolic hypertension.
Systolic hypertension is associated with increased pulse pressure (PP) and increased risk for adverse cardiovascular outcomes. However the pathogenesis of increased PP remains controversial. One hypothesis suggests that aortic dilatation, wall stiffening and increased pulse wave velocity result from elastin fragmentation, leading to a premature reflected pressure wave that contributes to elevat...
متن کاملRelationship between tissue factor pathway inhibitor and aortic stiffness assessed by MRI: the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA)
Background Arterial stiffness is an important predictor of risk for incident cardiovascular events. Impaired endothelial function has been related to arterial cyclic stress, large artery stiffness and remodeling. MRI has been used to noninvasively measure local aortic strain and distensibility, and regional pulse wave velocity (PWV) of the proximal aorta. We investigated the relationship betwee...
